ODACON: Our Own Film Forming Amine
ODACON is developed and manufactured by REICON for the treatment of water and water steam cycles. It forms a protective layer only a few nanometres thick on the metal surface. The layer is diffusion tight, it stays in place during operation, and it remains as a hydrophobic surface once the plant is shut down.

Iron Transport Before and After Dosing
Iron in feed water and condensate, measured over time in the same system. Before dosing the condensate iron rose to 0.25 ppm. After the start of ODACON dosing both stay below 0.02 ppm, and the condensate peaks disappear.


Corrosion Rates Under ODACON
Corrosion coupons record what happens on the metal itself. Before the film forming programme the carbon steel coupon corroded at 0.218 mm per year. Three months after the start of dosing the rate was 0.013, after five months 0.007. The stainless steel coupon stayed below 0.001.
Heat Transfer and Efficiency
Without treatment the condensate forms a closed film on the tube wall. That film sits between steam and metal and slows the heat transfer. On a hydrophobic surface the condensate contracts into droplets that run off and leave bare wall behind, so the steam meets the metal directly.
Registered for Food Processing Steam
ODACON is listed in the NSF White Book and registered under category G6 for use in the food processing industry. Its active substance, octadecylamine, is listed in FDA 21 CFR § 173.310 as a boiler water additive for steam in direct contact with food, excluding milk and dairy products.
